Historic "Bascom" House

Inside the house they had tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Plus lots of photographs, displays of historical artifacts (the Spy loved the arrow heads) and we got a bunch of nice pamphlets (on butterflies, hummingbirds, native Missouri landscaping and a tree ID guide) perfect for reading indoors on a much colder winter day (it was 55 today!)

It was a great outing. I actually can’t believe we’d never visited Shaw before because it is right up our alley for an “outing” and it is only a very short drive away. We will DEFINITELY be going back. I can’t imagine how it looks in the spring, all that prarie space will be filled with wildflowers!

Thanks! It was a STUNNING day! So warm and sunny. We are due for some frigid days in the next week so this was a perfect outing to remember when we are cozied up inside! Did you recognize the orange berries? A type of nightshade? Ground cherries? They were about the size of large blueberries. Hope you had a very Merry Christmas and are keeping warm in that cold Connecticut winter! I remember those winters well ;)

I’ve been meaning to get back to you about the orange berries. A few days ago I was walking in a field near here and I saw these same fruit – such a coincidence, since I have never seen them before. The spiny stem and hang of the fruit I believe are nightshade, but what kind? Solanum villosum has yellow fruit and looks like smooth stems but these were thorny. S.pyracanthum? Both of these are native to Africa, but apparently the seeds will self-sow just like tomatoes. Not seeing the leaf, it’s hard to make a positive ID. I should have collected some of those fruit to germinate in spring, but now with this blizzard we’re having, I’ve lost my chance! Another curiosity of nature that we’ll never know for sure!
